A risk assessment is a report about a person’s behaviour and the risks they may pose to other people.

Who has a risk assessment and why?

You may see us for a risk assessment if:

  • You have applied to the Family Court for contact with your child or children, and the Court has ordered that we complete an assessment of the risks you may pose to your ex-partner and children.  You are usually referred by Cafcass.

OR

  • Your children are in care proceedings, and Children’s Services (Social Services) have referred you.  The assessment is part of the care proceedings: Children’s Services and the Family Court take it into account when they decide who will care for your children.

OR

  • A social worker has referred you for a report about your behaviour and its effect on your partner, and/or to see if you can join the Violence Prevention Programme.

What happens next?

We invite you to two or three interviews with an assessor.  Usually we invite your partner or ex-partner to a separate interview, so that our report can include their views about your violent or abusive behaviour.

How long does it take?

A report for the Family Court usually takes 10 weeks from when we get the referral.

What does it cost?

If your children are in care proceedings and Children’s Services refer you, there is no charge to you.  If your children are not in care proceedings and you have applied for contact, the fee will usually be covered by your public funding certificate.  If you are not publicly funded we advise you or your solicitor to contact us regarding payement.
