Parenting during and following domestic violence is extremely difficult. Mothers’ parenting is almost always affected in and after abusive relationships. Difficulties may include losing confidence, experiencing feelings of guilt, having difficulties in attachment or in setting boundaries, and managing the effects of trauma. Evidence also suggests that perpetrators of domestic violence tend to be more authoritarian, less consistent and more likely to undermine mothers’ parenting.
Our services aim to reduce the impacts of domestic violence on parenting, and support parents in developing parenting skills.

Our assessments consider potential risks to the child, parents’ capacity to parent, and their support needs. We provide a detailed report with clear and achievable recommendations about how to manage the risks we identify. We can undertake assessments at Stephen’s Place Children’s Centre, in foster care homes where parents are placed with their children, and in parents’ homes.
A short assessment report takes between 15 and 20 hours to complete, and gives an assessment of a parent’s current parenting capacity. A full assessment report takes up to 40 hours to complete, over a period of six to 12 weeks. It provides an analysis of a parent’s ability and motivation to change, as well as his or her current parenting capacity.
Parenting Information Programme
This four-hour programme for separated parents can be run as a group or as an individual programme. It is delivered in two sessions of two hours, usually a week apart. It is free to parents if there has been a court order or court direction for the service, and you send us a copy of the court order with your referral. The programme covers: the divorce process; separation and moving forward; children’s and parents’ strengths; and communication between parents, and between parents and their children.
